Senior Men
Senior Men: a summary from the captain
Tom Brooks - Senior Men’s Captain
The UWBC Senior Men’s squad has gone from strength to strength over previous years. In the past year alone, they have earned the squad’s first-ever BUCS medal, had record finishes at both the BUCS regatta and HORR, set three club records on the Concept2 Erg in the 2k, the 5k, the 30r20, and sent multiple athletes to GB trials.
The success has been led by coach Gavin McWilliams, who has taken over and developed an exciting brand of rowing that has shown no sign of slowing down in the forthcoming years. Along with this, the squad is defined by a culture of togetherness, coupled with a brand of commitment across all its members.
This growth through forward-thinking, dedication, and a heap of enthusiasm, marks Warwick as an excellent university for both school and club rowers to continue their rowing career, along with the academic prestige that Warwick brings. In addition, it is also an ideal location for university-taught novice rowers to grow into their senior rowing careers.
As a university club, we offer multiple levels of participation. As we have become more competitive, we have developed our programme further, which would, on an average, training week, include 3 water sessions, 2-3 UT2 erg sessions and 1-2 hard erg sessions a week, with gym work added in on a per person basis and the individual’s needs.
Along with this extensive training plan, we also offer frequent socials that are open to all members of the club. Given the academic side of the university, we also look to tailor the individual needs of the training plan to make sure we maximise athletic and academic performance, coupled with life outside of rowing.
The Senior Men’s Squad is looking to push the boundaries of both university life and athletic performance, so whilst the training plan will offer opportunities for elite athletic performance, given the established culture and attitude of the squad, we are completely focused on the fulfilment of each athlete as an individual.
