Social Events
We believe that the social side of any team sport is important for success, particularly in rowing. The timing and fluidity of the boat requires an understanding between all rowers, and this must start with building relationships off the water. It is also so important that we create a family like environment where we celebrate all our efforts in training and races to ensure that people can enjoy themselves and take a step away from their studies to have a good time. That is why at the UWBC we offer a stacked social calendar every term with a range of sober and non-sober events. Sober activities such as team meals and bowling are perfect for race weeks to reach our goal of having strong, positive relationships within squads.
As is tradition at Warwick, most Wednesdays we hold ‘circles’ which have different themes each week and usually end in a night out at the student union. These nights are the most popular event we hold and are always a good laugh and an excellent chance to spend time with other members of the club you may not see as much. They are one of a range of non-sober socials that appear on our calendar along with bar crawls and chill drinks to name a few.
One of the most anticipated events in the social calendar is the UWBC annual ball. This usually happens in term 2 and includes a week full of club traditions, for example a race between our senior men and alumni squad at our boat house. The week is then concluded with our current members and alumni coming together in their best attire to enjoy an excellent meal and celebrate the achievements of all four of our women’s and men’s squads at some of the best venues in the area.
Perhaps equally anticipated is our trip to Henley Royal Regatta in July where, again, alumni and current members join to celebrate the achievements of the club throughout the year and watch some of the best rowers in the world go head-to-head in one of the most famous regattas in the world.
Our vibrant social calendar plays a crucial role in enhancing the overall experience for UWBC members, providing opportunities to form lasting friendships and unwind after training for a sport which can be intense. These social events not only enrich our club culture but also contribute to a positive and supportive environment that benefits everyone involved.
