Novice Men
Novice Men: a summary from the captain
Hugh Gunton - Novice Men’s Captain
The Novice Men squad is for rowers new to the sport, who have not competed in rowing events or likely even touched a blade. We will teach you all the fundamentals of rowing, from properly using the rowing machines, to developing silky tech on the water. By the end of the year you will have competed in races across the country at a high level before progressing to rowing with the Senior Men, many of whom are former novices themselves.
A typical week includes sessions out on our local stretch of river all organised by the captain and coach alongside planned erg sessions and gym work throughout. All that’s needed from you is commitment and a willingness to learn – we will help you with the rest!
The Novice Men have gone from strength to strength over the last few years, winning a BUCS bronze medal in 2023 and achieving a 4th place in 2024 which broke a 12 year strong club record. This was while also competing at prestigious events like Head of the River Race on the Thames and numerous others across the country.
Competition doesn’t stop the socials though, with the Nov Men always sporting a good turnout to circles as well as sober events like the CMD charity dance competition. At the start of term, there will be taster sessions for you to try out the sport and get to know the club. Joining the Novice Men is a perfect way to compete at BUCS and national competitions in a new sport while making lifelong friends in a supportive and social environment.
“Participating in novice rowing introduced me to the thrill of competitive sports without needing any prior experience, and through the club, I’ve met some of my closest friends at university. I would recommend it to anyone joining Warwick.” – Peter van Uem, Novice man “It’s the perfect place to make friends and stay fit, while getting to compete for the uni. If you enjoy it and train hard, then the opportunities are endless, as we raced on the Thames, and Olympic lakes in Eton.” – George Bonner, Novice man selected for GB student development.
